The biggest, grandest, most-watched single event in American sports is coming this weekend. Super Bowl XLVII kicks off at 6:30 PM EST, on February 3th, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The 47th Super Bowl features the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. The San Francisco 49ers will represent the NFC and the Baltimore Ravens will represent the AFC.
This will mark the 10th Super Bowl hosted in New Orleans. Including this year, 27 of the 47 Super Bowls will have been played in just three cities, with 10 in New Orleans, 10 in the Miami-area and 7 in the Los Angeles area. Super Bowl XLVII will mark the first time the two Super Bowl participants were coached by brothers. Jim Harbaugh will coach the San Francisco 49ers and John Harbaugh will coach the Baltimore Ravens. Super Bowl XLVII will also be the first Super Bowl featuring two undefeated participants. The 49er’s are 5-0 in previous Super Bowls, while the Ravens won their only game, Super Bowl XXXV against the NY Giants.
Super Bowl XLVII may be the last game for All-Pro LB Ray Lewis. Lewis is the only Raven that was on the Super Bowl XXXV team. Ravens WR Anquan Boldin lost Super Bowl XLIII while a member of the Arizona Cardinals. San Francisco 49ers starting QB Colin Kaepernick was not even the starter at the beginning of the year. He was backing up Alex Smith, who started for SF last year as well, and narrowly missed taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl, losing a close game to eventual Super Bowl XLVI, the New York Giants.
