Leave it to soft drink giant Pepsi to come up with one of the most unique sweepstakes contests in American history. The Pepsi Billion Dollar Sweepstakes was a cash prize contest that combined the thrill of a game show, with the excitement of a circus. While the Billion Dollar Sweepstakes occurred in 2003, it is still somewhat of a legend among sweepstakes enthusiasts.
What Exactly Was the Billion Dollar Sweepstakes?
The Pepsi Billion Dollar Sweepstakes contest was an extremely complicated, random drawing contest. This is just a brief overview of how the contest was conducted.
Pepsi distributed one billion special codes on the bottom of soda cans, and on cases of soda. People were required to enter the code online or mail it in for a chance to be one of a million cash prize winners. In addition to the potential to win a cash prize, anyone who redeemed a code was entered into the chance to be one of 1,000 people chosen to appear on a special TV show that offered them the potential to win one billion dollars.
What was the TV Game Show?
The 1,000 people who were chosen at random appeared in front of a live studio audience to play for a billion dollars. Those people were given a random six-digit code, which was used to determine which six would advance to the final round.
The six people who advanced to the final round were given an option to choose a cash prize, or move on to the next round. This was done until only one person remained. and that lucky person ( Richard Bay of West Virginia) was then given $1 million, which could be increased if they were able to randomly match the computer-generated final grand prize number.
Unfortunately, no one won the billion dollar cash prize during this legendary sweepstakes, but it certainly sparked a great deal of interest in cash prize sweepstakes.
In today’s day and age, people who want to try their luck in an effort to win $1 million dollars don’t need a lucky code on a soda can, or the ability to read minds and pick a randomly generated number. People can sign into sweepstake websites such as RewardIt and enter numerous contests and sweepstakes. Right now, you can enter to win:
